Background Information

\'\'Star Trek: Diplomatic Relations\'\' is the brain child of Alex Matthews, a long-time Star Trek fan who, after watching the entire run of \'\'Hidden Frontier\'\', listening to all the \'\'Section 31\'\' audio-episodes, and joining the cast of \'\'Star Trek: Intrepid\'\' as Lieutenant Keran Azhan, finally decided to have a go at some of his own ideas.

Feeling that setting a show on another ship had already been done, and wanting to do something different, he decided to set the show from the perspective of a group of main characters completely outside of the structure of Starfleet. Choosing the Diplomatic Corps made sense since it meant they were still trained professionals who would interact with Starfleet on a regular level, but not be part of it. The represent the interests of the entire Federation, not just the scientific and militaristic sides Starfleet does.

The idea was inspired by the Sidney Sheldon novel, \"Windmill Of The Gods\" which depicts a middle-aged woman finding herself appointed as the US Ambassador to Romania, behind the Iron Curtain. Although the novel rotated more around the relationships and such of the characters more then their jobs, it was enough of a glimpse that Alex had the idea to fit into the world of Star Trek.

After discovering the world of fan-films and fan-audio, Alex decided that this idea might work outside of simply writing it, and began work on turning it into an audio show. Thanks to invaluable support from the people at Darker Projects, Areakt Productions and Intrepid Productions (whose forum served as an initial launching pad for the project), the idea soon became real. Deciding to capitalise on the relationships formed through the forums of these sites, instead of auditioning people, Alex head-hunted instead, asking people to lend their voices to the characters he felt they would be best suited for. After this, he then opened up auditions to fit in those who had read the brief character blurbs and wanted a stab at a particular character.

\"Diplomatic Relations\" would not have been possible without the help of Michael Hudson, who stepped in as a friendly ear, before taking on many post-production responsibilities himself, while Alex focused on producing and directing, when not working out the various arcs and twists that the first season will contain. It was also Michael who was able to procur many of the various sound effects and foley effects that are contained in the show as well.
